The best U14 boys and girls (ages 12-13) from the USSA Central Region (Midwest and Great Lakes) joined together for six days of tough, advanced training July 28-August 2, at the U.S. Olympic Training Site – Northern Michigan University (NMU) (Marquette, MI) for the inaugural CXC Dream Camp.
17 athletes, 9 girls and 8 boys were selected for the camp based on their race results at CXC Youth Cup Races from the 2014-2015 ski season.
Over the course of the 5 day camp, we had a great mix of training opportunities that used all of what Marquette has to offer as an Olympic training center. Rollerski workouts using the countless miles of bike paths around town, running on trails along the coast of Lake Superior, and ski walking up Marquette Mountain are just a few things these young skiers experienced. It didn’t hurt that we had perfect, sunny weather for nearly the whole camp.
Special guests during the camp included Kyle Bratrud, (CXC Team Member & 2015 U.S. National Champion) and Ian Torchia (NMU Ski Team) teammates at the 2015 World Championships, both joined the athletes in select workouts during the camp. Jessie Diggins also made a special appearance during the camp via Skype!
The goal of the Dream Camp was to bring together top U14 athletes to train together and receive feedback as well as provide educational materials, offering a glimpse at the bigger picture of Nordic ski racing. These collaborative camps provide a motivating environment for the athletes to positively push themselves and improve together.
I would like to thank the US Olympic Education Center, Norther Michigan University, the other coaches, and especially the athletes, for making this camp a huge success. We are already looking forward and planning the 2016 Dream Camp. Ski Fast!
