HAYWARD, Wisconsin (Feb. 21, 2016) – Despite unfortunate spring-like weather, days before the Slumberland American Birkebeiner, the 52k course was fast on race day. The 52k freestyle Birkie was also the fifth race of the CXC Marathon Cup. Caitlin Gregg (Minneapolis, MN) won her fourth freestyle Birkie victory, which as been the most wins ever for an individual in Birkie history. David Norris (Fairbanks, AK) claimed the victory for the men in his first Birkie race.
In the women’s 52k freestyle race, it was a sprint to the finish between Gregg and France’s Aurelie Dabudyk, who is also the Worldloppet leader. Gregg was able to fight to outsprint Dabudyk by 5.2 seconds to claim her fourth Birkie victory. Gregg won in a time of 2:22:44.5.
The men’s 52k freestyle race was even more unpredictable as Norris, France’s Ivan Perrillat and Benoit Chauvet sprinted to the finish but it was Norris who fought to claim the victory just one second ahead of Perrillat and Chauvet. Norris won in a time of 2:05:35.4.
Alice Flanders led the CXC women’s team in 10th in the 52k freestyle Birkie and Hillary Patzer finished 44nd. In the 55k classic Birkie, Nicolette Reker led the CXC women with a 2oth place finish. Abbie Drach won the women’s Korterloppet in a time of 1:06:25.3.
Duncan Douglas led the CXC men’s team finishing 31st in the 52k freestyle Birkie with Cory Ellertson following close behind in 37th while Chris Pappathopoulos finished 42nd. In the 55k classic Nick Power just missed the top of the podium finishing second overall, with Andy Brown following close behind in fourth.
