CXC Members Named to the U.S. Paralympic Nordic Skiing Team

With CXC Alumni Jessie Diggins winning a gold medal at the PyeongChang Olympics, and current CXC Team member Caitlin Gregg winning her fifth American Birkiebeiner race, two more CXC members have their chance at history.

Kendall Gretsch (Downers Grove, Illinois) and Mia Zutter (Sun Prairie, Wisconsin) were named to the 2018 U.S. Paralympic Nordic Skiing Team competing at PyeongChang South Korea from March 9-18. This will be their Paralympic debut.

I was first introduced to cross-country skiing and biathlon when I moved to Madison the winter of 2015.

Through CXC I was able to try the sport a few times that winter and the next. I first got into the sport because I thought it would be a fun sport to try and good cross training for triathlon.

I began training more seriously the winter of 2017 with the hopes of making the Paralympic team in 2018.

WPR’s Maureen McCollum recently spoke with Mia Zutter, a native of Sun Prairie who is competing at the games in cross-country skiing and biathlon.

McCollum also spoke with Mia’s doctor, David Gamm about Stargardt disease, a degenerative eye condition Zutter was diagnosed with back in 2011.

Zutter talks about skiing with her visual condition, how she made the transition from running to cross-country skiing, and her expectations at this year’s Winter Paralympics.
