CXC Cup Second Stop In Madison

MADISON, Wis. (Dec. 23, 2018) – The CXC Cup rolled into the holidays with a second straight weekend of great racing at the Holiday Sprints in Madison’s Elver Park. A field of 190 athletes from nearly two-dozen CXC clubs took part.

For the second straight weekend, Loppet Nordic Racing came away the big winner with 10 age category titles. Lakeland Nordic Ski Team had five.

The event was highlighted with a XCX format, an emerging event used at the recent Youth Olympic Games. The courses had several additional elements to test both fitness and agility. It provided both spectators and competitors with a cyclecross atmosphere and thrills along with an occasion spill.

Jackson Adler (Ashwaubenon Nordic Ski Team) was a double winner, taking U20 titles in both freestyle and classic sprints. Josh Frett and Margo Nightingale, both of Loppet Nordic Racing, swept their respective U14 categories. U12 Brock Bartol (Bay Nordic), U12 Stella Mezza (Lakeland Nordic Ski Team) and U10 Jennings Kern (Lakeland Nordic Ski Team) also took both races in their categories.

Nightingale and Mezza are now a perfect four-for-four after sweeping their races last weekend in Houghton, Mich.

“What a fun weekend of racing, especially with the technical skills required for the skiX,” said CXC Sport Development Director Joe Haggenmiller. “Heat after heat had our junior and youth athletes were getting after it. The first time organizing crew from Madison Nordic Ski Club worked hard and provided athletes and fans a quality event.”

The event was produced by the Madison Nordic Ski Club at Elver Park, on Madison’s southwest side. CXC provided snowmaking to provide excellent conditions despite low natural snow.

“MadNorSki did an excellent job and CXC was happy to provide the snowmaking,” said CXC Executive Director Yuriy Gusev. “The investment in snowmaking by CXC not only helped produce these early season Holiday Sprints races in Madison, but will now leave excellent cross country trails for the holiday period at Elver Park.”

The CXC Cup will take a break for a few weekends, coming back with the Gitchi Gami Games at the American Birkebeiner Trailhead in Cable, Wis. January 19-20 with a classic sprint and classic mass start races.
