History Relived At Gitchi Gami Games CXC Cup

CABLE, Wis. (Jan. 20, 2019) – Four decades after the FIS Cross Country World Cup had its beginnings on the Telemark ski trails, the Gitchi Gami Games were back as the third tour stop for the CXC Cup Jan. 19-20. Cold temperatures and tough courses were in store for athletes in an event organized by the American Birkebeiner.

In the opening classic sprint on Saturday, Jacob Ajax (Univ. of Wisconsin-Green Bay) took the overall CXC Cup win over teammate Thomas Woolhouse in a strong day for UW-Green Bay. Sunday it was all College of St. Scholastica with a podium sweep in the men’s 10k classic mass start with Emil Book Bratbak taking the win over Nicholas Matelich. Cold temperatures Sunday forced a two hour delay at the start. Loppet Nordic Racing’s Lucinda Anderson swept both overall titles for the women.

In the CXC Junior Cup, Lauren McCollor of the Wayzata Nordic Ski Club continued her strong season sweeping wins in the U16 classic sprint and 5k classic mass start. Jasper Johnston (Ely High School) won the boy’s classic sprint with Caden Albrecht (Loppet Nordic Racing) came back a day after being disqualified in the sprint semi finals for obstruction, taking the 5k classic mass start.

“A big thanks to the volunteers and the Birkie staff who gave the athletes a high level racing experience at an amazing venue,” said CXC Sport Development Director Joe Haggenmiller. “These were great races and having the Birkie involved helped elevate the CXC Cup on these historic trails.”

The new sprint course at the Birkie Start was a great next step after the sprint racing in Madison last month. Saturday’s weather with calm winds and a bit of sun made for a good day of racing despite single digit temperatures.
