CXC Youth Cup Wraps Up With Midwest Championships

MINNEAPOLIS (Mar. 2, 2019) – The CXC Youth Cup wrapped up Saturday, March 2 with a chilly but sunshiny finale in Minneapolis’ Theodore Wirth Park. It was a season-ending opportunity for young racers to compete at the same venue as the March, 2020 FIS World Cup featuring Olympic champion Jessie Diggins and company.

Over 500 young skiers took part in the weekend festival organized by The Loppet Foundation with over 55 volunteers working long hours on Saturday as the event was condensed from two days to one. Over 200 participated in five competitive events – over 1,000 aggregate race entries! CXC Youth Cup events included individual start classic and skate races, plus a ski cross.

In addition to the CXC Youth Cup races, relays were also held as fun races and help build community for kids. Two relays were held – one a team sprint classic relay, similar to Jessie Diggins’ Olympic gold, and the other a four-person skate relay. In addition to the competitive events, over 500 kids participated in festival activities which included skijoring, laser gun biathlon, tug of war and a fish scale frenzy.

The cross country ski community had a glorious day celebrating the season together.  There was something for everyone from beginner skiers to U16 racers.

Saturday’s MyXC Festival and Midwest Championships kicked off with an individual start classic race. Nearly 150 young skiers ranging in age from six to 16 completed the individual classic race, with a particularly impressive showing in the U14 crowd of nearly 60.

Both Margo Nightingale of Loppet Nordic Racing and Linnea Ousdigian of Loppet Trail Kids swept to a perfect three-for-three day. Nightingale took all three wins in U14 girls while Ousdigian was the champion in each of the U10 girls’ races.

Double winners included Davis Isom in U14 boys, Stella Meza of Lakeland Nordic Ski Team in U12 girls, Karl Nelson in U10 boys and Owen Murphy in U8 boys.

Afternoon events included the freestyle mass start, ski cross and four-person mixed relays. Over 180 young skiers met at the start line to compete in the individual skate race. Following the skate race, skiers kicked off the first-ever LoppetX event, with nearly 200 skiers taking their chances on a new high-stakes ski cross course. The daredevil athletes helped to test the course in preparation for the Loppet Foundation’s bigger and better Fastenal Parallel 45 in March of 2020!
