CXC Athletes Invited To Regional Elite Camp

The top elite junior athletes in Central Region will have a unique training opportunity this July. Invited 16-19 year old athletes will take part in a six-day Regional Elite Group Camp (REG) under the leadership of both Central Cross Country Skiing and U.S. Ski Team staff.

The camp is set to take place July 7-12 at Gogebic Community College in Ironwood, Mich. It will run concurrently with the CXC Dream Camp for younger 12-13 year old skiers.

The camp will provide CXC elite junior skiers with the opportunity to train with peers from across the region and to have contact with U.S. Ski Team coaches. It’s a high-level training experience that will help high-achieving juniors step up even further.

“The experience of training with others and having that top-line U.S. Ski Team focus is a big asset for these emerging 16-19 year old athletes,” said CXC Sport Development Director Joe Haggenmiller. “Camp is also a fun experience and Ironwood has been a wonderful venue for CXC Camps the past few years.”

The camp will open with an uphill running time trial on day one. The following day, it will change into an uphill double poling time trial and an agility course. After the two days of evaluation, skiers will transition into a routine training camp environment with a mix of volume and intensity dryland training around the area.

Ironwood’s Gogebic Community College has been a wonderful camp host in the past. Campers spend time seeing their friends from the past season’s competitions in the college dorms and at meals. Training includes a wide range of activities from roller skiing on local roads, ski imitation at the local alpine areas, to running and hiking nearby mountains. Training is broken up with trips into nearby downtown Ironwood.
